RosettaNet Primer

Part 1: What is RosettaNet?

Global Standards Organization

RosettaNet is a not-for-profit consortium that publishes electronic-business (ebusiness) standards.

RosettaNet was founded in 1998 by leading companies in the information technology (IT) industry to address the need for a common, public language for electronic business.  In 2002, RosettaNet merged with the Uniform Code Council (now GS1 US™).  RosettaNet, a subsidiary of GS1 US is dedicated to the collaborative development and rapid deployment of open, ebusiness standards.

RosettaNet standards and services establish a common language for business transactions.  The standards create a foundation for integrating critical processes among partners within a global supply chain or trading network.

RosettaNet Community

Like many standards organizations, RosettaNet is a global community of ebusiness and standards advocates working in various for-profit companies.  RosettaNet does have some permanent staff, but most of the consortium work is done by the members.  RosettaNet members collaborate in several different forums.

RosettaNet Leadership

Executive leadership is provided by the RosettaNet Board of Governors.  This board is comprised of senior management from member companies representing multiple industries and includes GS1 US staff.  The board is responsible for driving the strategic roadmap for the consortium.

RosettaNet Global Councils provide the industry-specific leadership, define business priorities, and authorize programs for standards development.  The councils’ objectives are focused on resolving crucial industry challenges by driving collaboration across a single or multiple industries.  Current Global Councils include:

  • Electronic Components
  • Logistics
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing
  • Solution Providers
  • Telecommunications

RosettaNet Members

Each RosettaNet member company assigns a RosettaNet Champion to act as the primary liaison between the consortium and the company.  RosettaNet Champions are evangelists advocating the use of RosettaNet standards for automating ebusiness processes in the for-profit companies.

Champions work with both business and technical staff to develop strategies and roadmaps for connecting trading partners using RosettaNet standards.   The RosettaNet staff communicates regularly with RosettaNet Champions to ensure consortium activities meet the needs of its member companies.

The RosettaNet Implementation Champion, a second contact in each company, is responsible for leading RosettaNet implementation or deployment projects.  This individual may represent the technology needs of a company while the RosettaNet Champion is focused on the business priorities.

Both RosettaNet Champions can be identified by searching RosettaNet’s Trading Partner Directory, a valuable information service accessed via the RosettaNet website.

RosettaNet Events

Global Community Summits and RosettaNet Champion web broadcasts are schedule throughout the year providing members the opportunity to obtain the latest consortium updates and to actively collaborate with other members.

RosettaNet also participates in the annual U Connect sponsored by GS1 US.  This face-to-face conference offers an opportunity to learn about each of the GS1 US lines of business.  At U Connect, RosettaNet members can collaborate with GS1 US member companies from a broad range of industries

RosettaNet Standards Development

The RosettaNet standards are created and maintained through individual RosettaNet Programs.  These Working Groups are formed to solve specific industry process or B2B challenges.  There are two types of RosettaNet Programs.

Milestone Programs - These programs create new RosettaNet Partner Interface Process® (PIP®) specifications or drive the implementation of existing PIPs.  Each Milestone Programs is focused on a specific business-to-business (B2B) process.

Foundational Programs - These programs create or maintain all other RosettaNet specifications.  The Foundational Programs focus on the ebusiness technical architecture and implementation challenges.  These specifications are broad-reaching and apply to many different ebusiness processes (PIPs).

All RosettaNet members can participate in the programs and standards-development activities. The Global Council members have voting privileges to approve new specifications.

RosettaNet Regional Affiliates

There are RosettaNet Regional Affiliate organizations located in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.  The Affiliates support RosettaNet communities and standard-based process implementations with the companies operating in the associated country, but they do not independently create standards.  Affiliate members are welcome to participate in all of the RosettaNet Programs managed by the RosettaNet consortium headquartered in the United States of America.

RosettaNet User Groups

RosettaNet User Groups are comprised of a regional group of both new and experienced implementers.  The RosettaNet User Groups are independent organizations that are managed by ebusiness standards advocates.  The User Groups, while not legally associated with the RosettaNet consortium or it’s RosettaNet Affiliates, are actively encouraged.  RosettaNet provides guidance and updates on User Group activities at the RosettaNet community events.

User Group meetings are scheduled periodically to present formal case studies, share best practices, communicate lessons learned and identify issues and opportunities for RosettaNet consideration.  Individuals new to RosettaNet are strongly encouraged to join a local user group to gain valuable knowledge from companies who have real-life experiences implementing RosettaNet standards.  There are two RosettaNet User Groups.  Individuals interested in joining a RosettaNet User Group must directly contact the specific group and apply for membership.

BARD - Bay Area RosettaNet Deployment (http://rnetbard.webexone.com).  This group meets face-to-face in the San Francisco Bay Area with members from across the United States participating via web conference.

EDIFICE - European RosettaNet User Group (http://www.edifice.org).  This organization provides ebusiness support for implementers in Europe.  EDIFICE supports multiple ebusiness standards in addition to RosettaNet.  EDIFICE members have published several PIP Implementation Guides to support RosettaNet deployments in Europe.

Implementation Success

RosettaNet has been tracking standards implementations since 2001.  RosettaNet pro-actively collaborates with RosettaNet Champions, as well as non-member companies implementing the RosettaNet PIPs, to gather implementation statistics each year.  RosettaNet Champions submit details about the scope of RosettaNet implementations within their own company.  RosettaNet implementations continued to increase year by year as illustrated in this chart.

Implementation Scorecards

The scorecards capture these RosettaNet Implementation Scorecard Statistics:

Number of total partner connection showing count of all PIPs for all partners.
Number of unique Partner Interface Processes (PIPs)implemented by a company.
Number of unique Trading Partners connected through RosettaNet standards
